Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Theory
These chapters were a bit of refresher of things I have seen before- with some new perspectives added. Vygotsky is one theorist with which I have often agreed. Vygotsky believes that children develop with the aid of interactions with the members of the culture around them; that they are affected by the interactions they have with adults and other children. These experiences are how they learn what is valued by a culture and the method by which their brains continue to develop. One of the main components to Vygotsky’s theory is “reciprocal transaction” which basically means that adults, other children, and the environment have an impact on the child, but the child also has an impact on the adults, other children and the environment. His theory has become progressively more important, due to the realization that cultural factors do play a crucial role in a child’s development.
